PhD Exchange Program in partnership with MITACS Global Link

The purpose of this program is to establish a partnership between MITO2i at UofT and WCMR at Newcastle University for the international exchange of Trainees (PhD graduate students) from one institution to another through the MITACS Globalink program.

Mitacs is a Canadian government organization that funds cutting-edge innovation by creating internship and exchange opportunities for graduate students. Globalink Research Internship is a competitive initiative for trainees. Trainee applicants participate in a 12-week research internship under the supervision of Canadian university faculty members and/or Canadian students participate under the supervision of an International Supervisor. PhD students must be in their 2nd or 3rd year of their degree.

Outbound PhD students (UofT to Newcastle) MITACS will provide $6000 CAD award accordingly the UKRI agreement. MITO2i will supplement PhD student with $2000 CAD towards living cost in the UK. Inbound PhD students (Newcastle to UofT): Mitacs will provide $6000CAD award. WCMR will also contribute an estimated $2000 CAD to supplement the funding for UK students living in Toronto, costs to be paid directly.

Faculty eligibility criteria - To be eligible for hosting interns as part of the Globalink Research Internship program, you must:

  • Have one of the following statuses at an eligible institution: Full professor, Associate professor, Assistant professor, Adjunct professor, Emeritus professor
  • Be able to supervise international students at your institution
  • Be able to host interns over the course of 12 consecutive weeks

Roles and responsibilities of the supervisor - Host professors must ensure the following is in place for their Globalink research intern prior to the start of the internship (as required):

  • Research supervision
  • E-mail and internet access
  • Lab and/or office space
  • Software or hardware
  • Any safety or orientation information required for the project
  • Globalink research interns are expected to work 40 hours per week on their research project. During the internship, Globalink Research interns may be invited to attend industry and/or government relations events, professional skills training courses, or conferences.
